Having an antenatal lactation support offers you significant benefits, ensuring a smoother breastfeeding experience from the start.
One of the key benefits is to help increase your confidence. You gain a solid understanding of breastfeeding techniques and what to expect. This preparation reduces initial stress, anxiety and enhances the ability to manage breastfeeding challenges effectively.
You learn essential information about latching, feeding positions, and maintaining milk supply, which helps establish effective breastfeeding routines, allowing you to make confident decisions and handle any issues that arise.
A lactation consultant provides reassurance and practical advice, helping you approach breastfeeding with a more relaxed mindset.
As a mother it allows you to also recognise the signs of potential issues like latch problems or low milk supply early on, and you can seek timely interventions or support. The emotional support leading up to the birth is invaluable. Building that relationship with a consultant and connecting with support groups offers you a network of encouragement and advice, helping you feel supported and less isolated during the postpartum period.

When should I see a lactation consultant?Any time before or after the birth. However most importantly, if you’re having trouble with any aspect of breastfeeding or feeding your baby in general If you have an antenatal consultation, then it prepares you emotionally and physically. It gives you the opportunity to discuss any anxieties or expectations of breastfeeding. Learn how to attach correctly, the importance of skin to skin, breast assessment for lactation purposes, hand expressing and many more. This allows you to be better equiped to deal with the common issues mother’s can often face before and after the birth of a baby. A lactation consultant can also be consulted if breastfeeding isn’t your chosen method of feeding. She helps you with all things feeding, mother and baby - sleep and settling, bonding, baby’s behaviour. She’s also there to support father/partner too. Feeding your baby is multi faceted and there are many factors that play a role in how successful the feeding will go. It is important to keep an open mind as one piece of advice doesn’t fit all sizes. I look forward to meeting you.
