  • When should I see a lactation consultant?
Any time before or after the birth. However most importantly, if you’re having trouble with any aspect of breastfeeding or feeding your baby in general If you have an antenatal consultation, then it prepares you emotionally and physically. It gives you the opportunity to discuss any anxieties or expectations of breastfeeding. Learn how to attach correctly, the importance of skin to skin, breast assessment for lactation purposes, hand expressing and many more. This allows you to be better equiped to deal with the common issues mother’s can often face before and after the birth of a baby. A lactation consultant can also be consulted if breastfeeding isn’t your chosen method of feeding. She helps you with all things feeding, mother and baby - sleep and settling, bonding, baby’s behaviour. She’s also there to support father/partner too. Feeding your baby is multi faceted and there are many factors that play a role in how successful the feeding will go. It is important to keep an open mind as one piece of advice doesn’t fit all sizes. I look forward to meeting you.
  • What can I expect in my first session with a lactation consultant?
At your first session, a thorough history taking is essential to ascertain how the lactation consultant can best support you and your baby. Shushila is an absolutely amazing support when it comes to all things lactation: breastfeeding, expressing breast milk or directly breastfeeding, latching, nutrients and hydration needs to support the body… you name it, Shushila can support with it.

A few months before I gave birth to my first child I contacted Shushila for support with breastfeeding and ever since then Shushila has been an instant go-to for support with anything to do with breastfeeding. She is always right there providing me with all the necessary information that I ask about, delivering it with such ease and simplicity that I never once feel overwhelmed or bombarded with the information but instead equipped with simple suggestions to give a go at applying in my life.

All of the support I received from Shushila has been through phone and video calls, making it very easy to get in touch, very accessible. Each conversation with Shushila has supported me to make the simple shifts required to support whatever is next with breastfeeding for me, or, to confirm that what I am doing is exactly it and to keep going. I have come to Shushila with many different topics and within a day or so they are resolved after speaking with her and being open to receiving the simple wisdom. Some of these topics have included breastmilk volume and what affects it, how to breastfeed directly, alternatives to breastfeeding directly such as expressing and bottle-feeding, breast and nipple care, getting the correct breast pumps and the right flange size (mega important!), and, how to support the body when there is a blocked milk duct and why that is happening. As well as general check-ins and confirmation on the fact that as a woman and a mother we have all the answers in our body.

To name but one of the many things Shushila has supported me with - breastmilk volume - I have a freezer drawer full of expressed breast milk ahead of what my daughter requires on each day to day, which is very helpful for ‘growth-spurt’ days or if I need to venture out for a few hours. I wouldn’t have been able to have that supply ready to go without Shushila’s wise support.

I could not recommend Shushila highly enough, she will forever be my go-to for all things lactation and support in the wider field of mothering.
